More importantly, you never knew what might be in those vans. Could be empty, could be full of trash, could be full of the kind of stuff you really didn’t want to catch fire.

“Unit 35, be advised that other units will be delayed due to traffic conditions.”

Shit. “Understood.”

And there was the wreck. A city bus that had been T-boned by an old semi.It looked like the guy had managed to slow down enough so he didn’t just obliterate the bus, but it still looked pretty damned bad.  People were out on the sidewalk staring at the show or using their cell phones to take pictures of the wonderful smoke that was pouring from the trailer. Not only that, but the trailer was sagging on its wheels like the suspension was about to collapse.

What the hell is he carrying?

They brought the small rescue van to a stop, James stopping and leaping out.

Hell, Hank thought, We’re the first here—we even beat the cops.

“Are there any injured?” He asked the bus driver.

“No, man,” the driver said, obviously shaken. “Had a bunch of teens in the back, but nobody in the middle—if anyone had been…”

“Yeah. Bus is clear, right?”

“Yeah.  What about the truck driver?”

The man spit onto the ground. “Bastard jumped out of the truck and someone else picked him up—they tore out of here like the devil was on their tail.”

Well, that’s not good. Guys might run off for any number of reasons, but someone in  a truck, with a car following, that would also let him get on board and flee the scene of the crime?  That was a heavy duty felony, and that meant that whatever was in that truck might be…

“I’m going to check the trailer,” Hank called. 

“Man, can’t you wait until the rest of the units get here?” James sounded concerned.

“And if there’s someone in there? I can think of a few reasons that might have someone running like hell, and kidnap is one of them.”

“Fine—but don’t stick around. I don’t like the look of that fire.”

I don’t like the look either. He was just going to open the doors, (unless they were hot), check in, and if there were no people, move back until the other units got here. James had already moved the crowd away, so he could check and…

The rear doors were cool to the touch. Good. No fire. Hank pulled one door open, straining for a moment to get it moving. Then he looked into the rear, shining his flashlight over a collection of objects.

And he saw yellow trefoils.  A lot of them. Radiation warnings. And several of the containers bearing them were ruptured, with little piles of pellets by them. Hank slammed the door shut as he fell back, realizing that it was heavy for a reason.

Radiation shielding. The fuckers were driving radioactive materials through the middle of LA… A wave of weakness surged through him.

“James!” Hank said, his voice getting weaker. “Call… Call it in…”

“Yeah?” James came running as Hank sagged to the ground. “Shit, Hank!”

“Radiation—waste… get the area clear…” Well, shit, Hank thought, as the world seemed to fade into gray, the day had started out so well…
