May Marsdon pulled her arm back and flung the lit torch into the “church” that had so degraded her town. “And let this be a lesson to all of you!” she turned her back on the temple of depravity that had come so close to polluting the God-fearing men and women of Pleasant Creek.  “We will never tolerate depravity, or immorality in our town!”  She turned back to the man, the “priest” whose body and, it was whispered, male organ had brought so many women into his lustful orbit. The man who thought that he would come to drag their godly down into the muck! “If you return, we’ll hang you from the highest tree!”

“Now, is that the way to talk to someone you lust after?”  Thomas gazed at her, his look amused. May gasped, and glared, fighting the traitorous surge of warmth that rose within her body. “Ah, you still do, but you are unwilling to show it—”

“Silence, or I’ll have you horsewhipped!”

“I’ll be going, but you burned the temple of Hedon that I gifted to this sad little town. And so as its ashes sink into the earth, so shall it sink from memory.” He smiled. “But all who live here shall feel the influence of my temple and a century from today, one hundred years, A tree will sprout on this ground and all the town shall cast off the bonds you put on them and discover the pleasure that comes from dominion and submission!”

May glared at him, opened her mouth, then closed it. She quivered, once again remembering how he had almost seduced her to his wanton ways, made her his screaming little—no!

“Begone, and remember my warning!” With that, the sheriff started the car, and Thomas winked at her as the car started, her last sight of his face showing that he was smiling. For a moment, May wondered if he had a reason to smile. Then she whipped around to the crowd.

“Well! We have gasoline! Make certain that every bit of it is burned to the ground!”  A hundred years, she thought. In a hundred years, nobody would even remember this temple and the village would be as pure and moral as it was today. And that was the truth!
