“So!” Meredith said as she stretched out her hand to shake Michael’s hand,”I see that you’re here to work on a prenuptial agreement?”
“Yes, Miss Jones.” Michael’s grip was firm, his eyes powerful as he stared at Meredith.
Linda Cho seemed to find something about the fact that Meredith had offered Michael her hand hugely amusing.
Must be a traditional woman. Meredith didn’t care, so long as their money was good. “So, let’s talk about what a prenuptial is.” She smiled and gestured at her paperwork. “It’s an attempt to ensure that should anything happen to your relationship, there’s no question as to where various assets will go. I know a lot of people think that these are a little dishonest, but in this day and age, even a no-fault divorce, where you simply feel the need to move on, can be made far less complex if you have an active prenuptial agreement.” Now to ensure that they stay as paying clients. ”Of course, as your assets change over the duration of your marriage, we may need to revisit some aspects of this agreement.”

“Oh, we intend to do that,” Michael said with a grin. “I did my research and you come highly recommended.” He glanced over her body and for a second, Meridith thought his gaze had lingered on her breasts, but then he had one hand out, as Linda put her small hand in his. “I want my family to be as protected as possible.”
“Well,” Meredith said, taking a quick sip of water to disguise the odd heat she felt as she looked at Michael. “Let’s get started.”
Michael and Linda had their papers well organized. There was only one part that sounded a little odd.“Linda, you’re taking a sabbatical from teaching?”
“Yes, we decided to take some time to ourselves,” Linda said, leaning against Michael.
Meredith blinked at that. Most college professors were neck deep in the battles to stay funded. Only the oldest and most established professors were able to take sabbaticals.
Oh well, Maybe Linda’s decided her new profession needs to be babymaker. Meredith carefully didn’t smirk. Nobody got ahead by laughing at a client’s choice.
In front of them, at least.
“Well, these are in order—I’ll need some of the background data to set up a proper agreement.” Meredith tapped her pen against the table. “You’ve got a fairly complex estate, especially with all of these investments and savings.”
“Well, I can solve that,” Michael said. He quickly wrote down a web address and login data on a pad of paper and slid it over to Meredith. “Here you go. It’s an isolated network, so don’t worry about any malware. I use it for my business, and I’ll just upload all the files the directories you’ll have access to.”
“I—” Meredith shut up. Normally accessing a strange network was a no-no, but they were paying her, and more importantly, Michael was rich enough that nothing Meredith had would be worth him infecting her network.
And as for Meredith, well, client-attorney confidentiality would apply to this.
“Okay,” she said. “When will the files be up?”
“Oh, by the end of the day,” Michael said, rising up and smiling at her. He didn’t offer to shake her hand.
Meredith twitched, but she remembered Linda’s look. Maybe she didn’t like a woman shaking her man’s hand.
Where the hell did that come from?
“I’ll have my secretary take a look at the files, and I’ll go over them, so, shall we make an appointment for Friday?”
“Dear, how about Monday?” Linda said. “We have that trip on Friday.”
“Right. Would Monday be convenient for you?
Meredith’s smile didn’t falter. Finishing this on Monday would be a nice start to the week. “Certainly!”
“Very well, then,” Michael said. “I look forward to… Working with you.”
For some odd reason, Linda giggled at that.
Meredith escorted them out of the office, saying a few last farewells. On the way back, she handed the information to Dana.
“Dana, check these out first. I’ll look at them later this evening.”
“Of course, Ma’am,” The timid secretary bent down to her work, her clothes once again failing to disguise her body.
You’ll never get ahead if you don’t use what you were given, Meredith thought. Oh well, not her problem. With that, she went back to her office. She had work to do today.
